How do I clean my Vitamix? Clearing cloudiness in the container

Spülmittel wird in einen Vitamix-Behälter gegeben, der Deckel liegt daneben auf der Arbeitsplatte

A Vitamix container doesn't get dirty, it gets cloudy. That's a difference, and it decides what actually helps. If you tackle cloudiness with more washing-up liquid and more scrubbing, you won't get anywhere, because the cause doesn't sit on the surface. It sits in it.

Why the container gets cloudy

The milky layer is made of minerals. They come from fruit and vegetables and from the tap water you rinse with. Every time you blend, a wafer-thin film stays behind, and over time layer builds on layer. The harder your water is, the faster this happens.

This isn't a material fault or wear and tear. The container is made from Tritan, a plastic that withstands temperatures up to 100 °C. The cloudiness doesn't sit in the Tritan, it sits on it. It can be dissolved, and the container is clear again afterwards.

Two things are often confused with this:

  • Discolouration is something different. Turmeric, beetroot, carrot and many spices stain the plastic. That's a colour, not a deposit, and vinegar won't remove it.
  • Fine scratches build up over the years from hard ingredients. They scatter the light and make the container look dull, even when it's clean.

After every use: self-cleaning

The most effective step against cloudiness is the one that stops it from forming in the first place. It takes one minute and needs no brush.

  1. Rinse the container with warm water straight after pouring it out. Not hot water. Dried-on residue is the start of every deposit.
  2. Fill the container halfway with warm water and add one or two drops of washing-up liquid. More just creates foam.
  3. Put the lid on and let it click into place, then lock the lid plug.
  4. Turn slowly from speed 1 up to speed 10 and run it for 30 to 60 seconds. Then turn the dial back down to speed 1 before you switch off.
  5. Rinse and leave to air-dry upside down.

Step 2: warm water halfway up, one or two drops of washing-up liquid. More just creates foam.

Step 4: lid locked, 30 to 60 seconds on the highest speed. Then rinse and leave to dry upside down.

Two models take the fourth step off your hands: the Ascent A3500i and the Pro 750 have a self-cleaning program. You select it, press start, and the machine stops on its own. On all other models, you turn the dial up by hand.

Important: don't fill hot water in for self-cleaning. Hot liquid expands while blending and can lift the lid.

Once a month: dissolving the cloudiness

If the layer is already there, acid helps: plain white household vinegar dissolves the minerals without attacking the plastic.

  1. Mix cold vinegar and cold water in equal parts, enough to completely cover the cloudy area. In the 2.0-litre container, that's about 900 millilitres per side; in the 1.4-litre container, correspondingly less.
  2. Leave it to stand for four hours. Don't blend, don't stir. The time does the work.
  3. Pour it out, rinse thoroughly with clean water and leave to air-dry.

For stubborn spots, you can repeat the process. If the cloudiness is still there after the second round, it's usually no longer a deposit, but discolouration or a surface that has turned dull.

Don't confuse this soak with the disinfecting step from the instruction manual. That's a different process with different quantities and a short contact time, and it targets germs, not limescale.

Lid, lid plug, centring pad and tamper

These parts can be cleaned in warm soapy water, then rinsed under running water and dried. You can take out the centring pad, the soft cushion on the motor base, for cleaning.

The lid is made of two parts. If you only wipe the outside, you'll miss the groove between the lid ring and the insert, where residue collects.

Can the container go in the dishwasher?

Yes. The European instruction manuals say this for every model we carry, word for word: "Our normal cleaning and sanitising procedures or a dishwasher cleaning cycle ensure a complete and thorough cleaning of your container and its components." The instructions for hand-washing appear there explicitly under the heading of what to do if you do not want to wash the container in the dishwasher.

The same applies to the lid, lid plug, centring pad, tamper, Tamper Manager and spatula. All of them are dishwasher-safe. We recommend the top rack, it's gentler there. The cups and seals of the Personal Cup Adapter are explicitly approved for the top rack; the manuals don't specify a rack for the large containers.

Even so, our recommendation stays hand-washing. Not out of caution, but against cloudiness: the self-cleaning cycle in the machine takes one minute, uses soft water and a little washing-up liquid, and leaves fewer deposits than a dishwasher cycle with detergent concentrate and rinse aid. The dishwasher is allowed and doesn't cause any harm. If you use the container daily, you're better off with self-cleaning.

The motor base

Unplug it before every cleaning. This applies even if you just want to wipe it quickly.

The motor base is cleaned on the outside only, with a soft, damp cloth and mild soapy water. It must never be submerged in water or any other liquid, and it doesn't belong under the tap. Afterwards, dry all surfaces immediately.

What you shouldn't do

  • Unscrew the blade assembly. The container is built so that it can be cleaned completely without removing the blades. If you loosen the retaining nut, the container often won't seal properly again afterwards.
  • Abrasive cleaners and scouring pads. They leave exactly the fine scratches that make the container look dull for good.
  • Put the container away wet. Residual water dries in and leaves new marks. Leave it to air-dry upside down.
  • Use the dry grains container while damp. The Interlock dry grains container works with a dry blade and must be completely dry before every use.

Which household remedy works, and which doesn't

Acid helps against limescale. Everything else is working on the wrong problem.

  • Plain white household vinegar with around 5 percent acidity is the remedy of choice. It's mixed with water in equal parts and doesn't need to be measured precisely.
  • Vinegar essence has 25 percent acidity and is significantly stronger. If you use it, dilute one part essence with four parts water to reach the same strength. It doesn't belong in the container undiluted.
  • Citric acid from the drugstore works just as well. Dose according to the pack instructions, mix it cold and rinse thoroughly afterwards.
  • Bicarbonate of soda and baking powder are alkaline. They do nothing against limescale, and as a paste they act like a fine abrasive. That leaves scratches.
  • Denture-cleaning tablets dissolve build-up and discolouration, but they leave a smell of their own that lingers in the plastic. For a container used to prepare food, that's the wrong approach.
  • Dishwasher tablets dissolved in the container are too aggressive for this purpose. They're formulated for the conditions inside a dishwasher, not for hand use.

Cloudiness is not a warranty case

A milky surface is a mineral deposit and therefore a care issue, not a material defect. The same applies to discolouration from spices and to scratches that occur with use. Both are cosmetic.

It's a different matter if the container starts leaking at the base or around the blade mount, if it cracks while blending, or if unusual noises occur. In that case, get in touch with us before you keep using it.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my Vitamix container turned milky?

These are minerals from fruit, vegetables and tap water that build up in thin layers. It happens faster with hard water. The layer can be dissolved with white vinegar.

How often should I deep-clean?

Once a month is enough with daily use. If you do the self-cleaning after every blend, you'll need it less often.

Does bicarbonate of soda help against cloudiness?

Only to a limited extent. Bicarbonate of soda works mechanically as a fine abrasive and is alkaline. Acid dissolves mineral deposits, not alkali; white vinegar is the right remedy and doesn't attack the surface.

Can I use citric acid instead of vinegar?

It also works against limescale. Stick to the dosage on the pack and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Vinegar has the advantage that the amount doesn't need to be measured.

My container smells of garlic. What helps?

Smell sits in the same fine deposits. Do the self-cleaning first, then the vinegar soak. Afterwards, leave the container open and upside down to dry, don't put it away with the lid on.

Which Vitamix models have a self-cleaning program?

The Ascent A3500i and the Pro 750. On all other models, self-cleaning works exactly the same way, you just turn the speed up by hand.

Is the Vitamix container dishwasher-safe?

Yes, and the lid, lid plug, centring pad, tamper and spatula are too. The European instruction manuals list the dishwasher as a fully valid option. We recommend the top rack and, where possible, hand-washing: the one-minute self-cleaning leaves fewer deposits.

Can discolouration from turmeric still be removed?

Usually not completely. Pigments such as curcumin soak into the surface. Prevention helps: don't leave staining ingredients standing in the container, and rinse it straight after pouring out.
