Make Your Own Ginger Shot: In the Vitamix Without a Juicer

Selbstgemachte Ingwer Shots in Glasfläschchen mit frischem Ingwer und Zitronen

What is a Ginger Shot?

A Ginger Shot is a small, concentrated portion of fresh ginger combined with citrus and a touch of sweetness. Ginger has long been valued in many kitchens as a warming, spicy seasoning. The shot brings that intense aroma into a handy form – made fresh yourself, it tastes noticeably more lively than store-bought versions, and you decide on every ingredient.

The Base Recipe

The base could not be simpler: about 100 g fresh ginger, the juice of roughly 4 lemons (approx. 200 ml) and 1 to 2 tbsp maple syrup to taste. Put it all together in the high-performance blender, about one minute on the highest setting – and you have around ten shots. We keep the sweetness deliberately low; many store-bought and homemade recipes are noticeably sweeter than necessary.

You can find the full step-by-step recipe here: Classic Ginger Shot.

Blender or Juicer? Why the High-Performance Blender Comes Out Ahead

For a Ginger Shot you need no juicer. On the contrary: a high-performance blender has clear advantages here.

  • No waste: The whole ginger goes into the container with its skin and is fully broken down. A juicer separates out the juice and discards the pulp – the fibers and part of the valuable contents – along with it.
  • Full yield: You use the entire amount you bought.
  • No second appliance: A high-performance blender replaces the juicer entirely.
  • Longer shelf life: Thanks to the fiber it contains, the blended shot tends to keep longer than pure pressed juice.

How finely the ginger is broken down decides the heat and the yield – and that is exactly what the Vitamix does especially thoroughly, because the high speed breaks the cell structure down completely.

How Hot? Dialing In the Heat

On its own, a Ginger Shot is intensely hot. That is easy to control:

  • Dilute 1:3 with water: one part shot, three parts cold water – mild and easy to drink.
  • As an infusion: topped up with hot water for a warming, tea-like drink.
  • More citrus or orange: softens the heat (see the mild variation).

Peeling, Skin, Organic

With organic ginger, the skin can stay on – a high-performance blender breaks it down completely. Just cut off any dry ends and wash the root thoroughly. Young ginger has a thinner skin and is milder; older ginger is more fibrous and hotter. If you want a particularly fine texture, peel the ginger with a spoon.

Shelf Life & Freezing

In a clean, sealed glass bottle, a homemade Ginger Shot keeps in the fridge for about 5 to 7 days. Variations with honey tend to keep a little longer thanks to its preserving properties, while purely fruity variations keep a little less. Handy for stocking up: pour the shot into ice cube trays and freeze it in portions – individual cubes can be thawed as needed.

Using the Pulp

If you strain the shot, fibrous ginger remains are left over. You do not have to throw them away: they can be reused as a spicy ingredient in tea, soups, curries or dressings, or frozen in portions. That way you really use the whole root.

The Variations at a Glance

Many variations can be derived from the base recipe:

Which Vitamix Suits Ginger Shots?

In principle any Vitamix high-performance blender, since the high speed breaks the ginger down reliably. For getting started, the Explorian E310 is a good fit; for more convenience and programs, the Ascent series. With small amounts, the included tamper helps to keep everything at the blades. Make sure there is enough liquid (citrus juice) as a base so a clean vortex forms.

If you like to blend your own, there is more to find here: creamy nice cream without an ice cream maker, fruity smoothies like the Oat-Blueberry Smoothie or the Green Spring Juice. They all work without a juicer – just with the blender.

Common Questions About Ginger Shots

How much Ginger Shot should you drink per day?

As a rule of thumb, about 2 to 4 g of ginger per day applies for healthy adults; a small shot (30 ml) is below that. Excessive consumption can irritate the stomach. When in doubt, check with a doctor.

When do you drink a Ginger Shot – morning or evening?

That is a matter of taste. Many prefer it in the morning. With a sensitive stomach, better not on an empty stomach, but with or after a meal.

Blend with or without the skin?

Organic ginger can be used with the skin on; the high-performance blender breaks it down completely. Lemon and orange are squeezed, and their peel does not go in.

Can I freeze Ginger Shots?

Yes, in portions in ice cube trays. Thaw individual cubes as needed.

Honey or maple syrup?

We use maple syrup (vegan). Honey works just as well and extends the shelf life slightly. Use sweetness sparingly.

How long does a homemade Ginger Shot keep?

Chilled in a sealed glass bottle, about 5 to 7 days.

Do I have to strain the shot – and what do I do with the pulp?

Both work: strain it for a smooth texture, or leave the fruit pulp in. You can reuse the pulp in tea, soups or dressings.

Ginger Shot during pregnancy or for children?

Pregnant women should consume ginger only sparingly and, when in doubt, check with a doctor or midwife. For small children, the heat is not very suitable; if at all, only heavily diluted and after consulting a doctor.

Ginger Shot while taking medication?

Ginger can affect blood clotting. Anyone taking anticoagulant medication or facing surgery should discuss regular consumption with a doctor beforehand.

This information does not replace medical advice. In case of pregnancy, pre-existing conditions or medication use, please check with a doctor.
