When a Vitamix stops doing what it should, the most common question isn't "is this a warranty case", but "what happens to my device now". This page describes the process from reporting the fault to getting your device back, along with the deadlines that apply.
First, the point that surprises many people: A large share of cases are resolved without you sending anything in. We replace containers, lids and accessories without asking for the old part back. Only when the motor base is suspected does the device need to travel.
Step 1: Report it
The way to do this is through the form on the Complaints page. We need three pieces of information:
- The model. It's printed on the front of the motor base.
- A photo of the serial number. The label is on the motor block, located underneath or on the back depending on the model. The number has 18 digits and tells us the production date.
- What's happening. The more precise, the faster. A short video of the noise or a photo of the leak often saves a whole round of follow-up questions.
Add proof of purchase if you have it. A receipt, invoice or order confirmation is enough, even from other retailers.
Step 2: We check the warranty
First, we establish whether and how long the manufacturer's warranty applies. There are two ways to do this, in this order:
- With proof of purchase, the purchase date counts. This is the better case for you, because a device is often sold months after production.
- Without proof of purchase, we use the production date from the serial number. The warranty then starts earlier, but it still applies.
How long it lasts depends on the model, not the series. You can find the terms for each device and the full scope in the warranty terms.
Step 3: One of three routes
The case is resolved by phone or email
A lot of what looks like a defect isn't one. A device that suddenly stops has usually triggered the overheat protection and will run again after a break. A crossed-out circle on the display often just means a magnet is missing from the lid, not that the container is faulty. If we can tell this from your description, we'll tell you what to do, and the matter is settled.
A part is sent to you, and nothing needs to come back
We replace containers, tampers and accessories directly. We don't need the old part back, you can dispose of it. The replacement is sent to your address at our expense. If the lid is affected, you get the complete container-and-lid set; we don't issue lids on their own.
The device goes to the workshop
If the motor, drive or electronics are suspected, our service workshop checks the device. More on that below.
Special case: the Ascent series container
The Ascent models carry two systems, either of which can prevent the device from starting. SELF-DETECT uses a chip in the container base to recognise which container is fitted; if this fails, the display shows three dashes. Interlock is a separate safety system that only allows the device to start when the lid is fitted correctly, so no one reaches into the container while the blades are turning; if it doesn't recognise the lid, the display shows a crossed-out circle.
This case moves especially fast: under warranty, we replace the complete container-and-lid set without you sending anything in. This applies to both displays. What we need for this is a single photo that shows, at the same time:
- the container with lid, fitted on the motor base
- the switched-on device, with the display showing the three dashes or the crossed-out circle
Both need to be in the same picture. Two separate photos aren't enough, because only the combination shows that this exact container isn't being recognised on this exact device.
Before that, check two small things that often make the replacement unnecessary: Is the container sitting firmly on the centring pad? Is the lid engaged on both tabs, and are both magnets present in it? If a magnet is missing, the lid is the cause. We still replace the complete container-and-lid set regardless.
If the device is sent in
You'll get a shipping label for sending it in. In Germany and Austria this runs through a returns portal; in the other countries we send you the label. For valid warranty claims, we cover the shipping costs in both directions.
One point that often goes wrong: always send in the complete device, motor base and container together. The workshop checks the drive and the blade assembly together, because some faults only show up in combination. If only the motor base arrives, it adds an extra round to the process.
Repair or replacement is generally completed within 30 days of arrival.
What isn't covered by the warranty
So you know beforehand, instead of finding out afterwards:
- Drop damage, including cracks in the handle.
- Cosmetic issues, meaning cloudiness from minerals, discolouration from spices and scratches from use. What helps against cloudiness is covered in How do I clean my Vitamix.
- Foreign objects in the container, such as a spoon blended in by accident.
- Operation through a voltage converter. This voids the warranty; the note is also in the manual.
- Continuous commercial use. The manufacturer's warranty applies to private household use.
Your statutory warranty rights remain unaffected by this.
Why this is handled by us, and not in the USA
As an official Vitamix distributor, we handle warranty cases in Europe ourselves. You don't have to contact a retailer outside the EU or send anything across the Atlantic. What matters is your country of residence, not the country where you bought the device. If you live outside our territory, we'll tell you the distributor responsible.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a repair take?
Generally up to 30 days from arrival at the workshop. If only a part is replaced, it's usually much faster, because nothing needs to be sent in.
Do I need to keep the box?
No. A sturdy box with padding material is enough for sending it in. The original box is convenient, but not a requirement.
What if I no longer have proof of purchase?
Then the production date from the serial number counts. The warranty starts earlier as a result, but it isn't rejected.
Do I get a replacement device while it's being repaired?
Generally not. Because most cases are resolved without sending anything in, the time without a device is usually short.
I bought the blender second-hand. Does the warranty apply?
The manufacturer's warranty is tied to the device, not to the first buyer. It continues to run from the purchase or production date. Get in touch with the serial number, and we'll tell you how much longer it runs.
My container isn't being recognised. Do I have to send in the whole device?
No. For the Ascent models, we replace the container against a photo, without a return. The photo needs to show the container, lid and switched-on display in one picture.
