Make Your Own Ginger Shot: In the Vitamix Without a Juicer

Homemade ginger shots in small glass bottles with fresh ginger and lemons

What is a ginger shot?

A ginger shot is a small, concentrated portion of fresh ginger, combined with citrus and a touch of sweetness. Ginger is prized in many cuisines as a spicy, sharp spice. The shot brings this intense aroma into a handy form – made fresh yourself it tastes noticeably fresher than bought versions, and you decide every ingredient yourself.

The basic recipe

The base couldn't be simpler: around 100 g fresh ginger, the juice of about 4 lemons (approx. 200 ml) and 1 to 2 tbsp maple syrup to taste. Everything together in the high-performance blender, around one minute on the highest setting – done, that's roughly ten shots. We keep the sweetness deliberately low; many bought and home-made recipes are noticeably sweeter than they need to be.

Blender or juicer? Why the high-performance blender is superior

For a ginger shot you don't need a juicer. On the contrary: a high-performance blender has clear advantages here.

  • No pulp waste: the whole ginger, skin and all, goes into the container and is finely broken down. A juicer separates off the juice and throws away the pulp, in other words the fibres.
  • Full yield: you use the entire amount you bought.
  • No second appliance: for shots, a high-performance blender replaces the juicer.

How finely the ginger is broken down determines the sharpness and yield – and this is exactly where the Vitamix excels, because the high speed breaks down the cell structure very finely.

How spicy? How to dial in the heat

Neat, a ginger shot is intensely spicy. That's easy to control:

  • Dilute 1:3 with water: one part shot, three parts cold water – mild and easy to drink.
  • As an infusion: pour over hot water for a warming, tea-like drink.
  • More citrus or orange: softens the heat (see the mild variation).

Peeling, skin, organic

With organic ginger, the skin can stay on – a high-performance blender breaks it down finely. Just trim off any dry ends and wash the root thoroughly. Young ginger has thinner skin and is milder; older ginger is more fibrous and sharper. If you want a particularly fine texture, peel the ginger with a spoon.

Shelf life & freezing

In a clean, sealed glass bottle, a home-made ginger shot keeps in the fridge for a few days. Handy for stocking up: pour the shot into ice cube trays and freeze it in portions – individual cubes can be thawed as needed.

Using the pulp

If you strain the shot, fibrous ginger residue is left over. You don't have to throw it away: it can be used as a spicy ingredient in tea, soups, curries or dressings, or frozen in portions. That way you really use the whole root.

The variations at a glance

Many variations can be derived from the basic recipe:

Which Vitamix is suitable for ginger shots?

Basically any Vitamix high-performance blender, since the high speed reliably breaks down the ginger. For getting started, the Explorian E310 is suitable; for more convenience and programs, the Ascent series. For small quantities, the supplied tamper helps keep everything at the blades. Make sure you have enough liquid (citrus juice) as a base so a clean vortex forms.

Frequently asked questions about ginger shots

How much ginger shot should you drink per day?

A 30 ml shot is meant to be enjoyed, not taken as a daily dose. Larger amounts of ginger can irritate the stomach: if you're sensitive, dilute the shot or drink it with a meal. If in doubt, check with a doctor.

When do you drink a ginger shot – morning or evening?

That's a matter of taste. Many people prefer it in the morning. If you have a sensitive stomach, it's better not on an empty stomach, but with or after a meal.

Blend with or without the skin?

Organic ginger can be used with its skin, the high-performance blender breaks it down finely. Lemon and orange are juiced, the peel doesn't go in.

Can I freeze ginger shots?

Yes, in portions in ice cube trays. Thaw individual cubes as needed.

Honey or maple syrup?

We use maple syrup (vegan). Honey works just as well. Dose the sweetness sparingly.

How long does a home-made ginger shot keep?

Chilled in a sealed glass bottle, a few days.

Do I need to strain the shot – and what do I do with the pulp?

Either works: strain for a smooth texture, or leave the pulp in. You can use the pulp in tea, soups or dressings.

Ginger shot during pregnancy or for children?

During pregnancy, discuss regularly consuming larger amounts of ginger with a doctor or midwife beforehand. For young children the shot is too spicy; if given at all, only heavily diluted.

Ginger shot while taking medication?

Anyone taking medication regularly, especially blood-thinning medication, or about to have surgery, should discuss regularly consuming ginger with a doctor beforehand.

These notes do not replace medical advice. In case of pregnancy, pre-existing conditions or medication, please check with a doctor.
